Grinder Pump

A sewage pump with a grinder at its intake: a hardened rotary cutter turns against a stationary cutter and shears solids into small particles before the impeller delivers them under pressure. For sewage, sludge, effluent or surface water mixed with solid or fibrous material — 1 to 15 HP, 32 to 150 mm, single- and three-phase.

What it’s for

Ground Small Before It Reaches the Impeller

Some sewage carries solids that settle, wrap or jam — vegetable waste, cloth, thin plastic, the sludge that builds up in a sump between runs. The PG Series grinds them first: a rotary cutter on the pump shaft turns against a stationary cutter at the intake, both in hardened stainless steel, and shears the solids into small particles that the impeller then delivers under pressure.

Fifty-two models from 1 to 15 HP cover 32 to 150 mm discharges, flows of 2 to 300 m³/hr and heads up to 45 m, on the same motor, seal and casing construction as Point’s other sewage pumps. For special duties, the impeller and casing are available in graded steels. Where the effluent is mostly fibre and hard dirt, the PC cutter pump covers the same range; where large solids can pass whole, the PS Series.

Applications

Where It’s Specified

Sewage & septic effluent

Raw sewage and septic effluent from homes, apartments and commercial buildings, with the solids and fibre it carries ground down at the intake.

Sump emptying

Emptying sumps and pits where sludge and slurry solids settle between runs — what’s drawn back in is ground small before it reaches the impeller.

Agricultural & vegetable waste

Commercial and agricultural sewage carrying vegetable waste, thin pieces of plastic and cloth — the solids that wrap or jam an ordinary impeller.

Industrial sewage treatment

Industrial sewage on its way into sewage and effluent treatment plants, with the solids already ground small.

Mining & power plants

Slurry and surface water in mines and power plants, wherever solids tend to accumulate. See industries we serve →

Grinder, Cutter or Chopper?

Point builds several sewage pumps that reduce solids before pumping them. What differs is how — grinding, cutting or chopping — and the flow and head they reach.

  • PG SeriesYou’re here

A hardened stainless grinder shears solids into small particles — sewage, sludge and effluent with solid or fibrous material, 2–300 m³/hr to 45 m.

  • PC Series — Cutter

Stationary and rotating cutters hardened to 55–60 HRC for fibrous and hard material, 2–300 m³/hr to 45 m.

  • PCG Series — Chopper Grinder

Chopper cutter plus hardened screw rotor — oversized and stringy material at 7–1000 m³/hr to 30 m. The series for biogas feedstock.

  • PA Series — Agitator Slurry

Agitates settled solids back into suspension before transfer — 2–300 m³/hr to 45 m, particles up to 135 mm.

  • PS Series — Sewage

Passes solids and fibre through a large discharge — 2–800 m³/hr to 45 m, particles up to 270 mm.

  • PDC Series — Drainage Cutter

Drainage water and effluent carrying fibres and rags — a cutting impeller and cutter plate, 1–10 HP, up to 150 m³/hr and 25 m.

  • PCC Series — Chopper

Rotary and stationary cutters chop oversized solids and stringy material as it pumps — 7–1000 m³/hr to 30 m.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the grinder work?

A rotary cutter on the end of the pump shaft turns against a stationary cutter at the intake. Solids are sheared into small particles as they pass between the two, and only then reach the impeller, which delivers them under pressure — so cloth, plastic and vegetable waste can’t wrap or jam it.

PG or PC — which do we need?

Both cover the same 52 duty points. Choose the PG where the solids should be ground small before pumping — sludge, vegetable waste, thin plastic, cloth. The PC cutter pump has tool-steel cutters for effluent heavy with fibre and hard dirt. For oversized solids at much larger flows, the PCC chopper pump.

How do I read a PG model name?

Left to right: the discharge size in mm, the series, then the duty point — flow in m³/hr and head in metres — and the motor in HP. 100PG-80-20-10.0 is a 100 mm pump delivering about 80 m³/hr at 20 m head on a 10 HP motor.

Why do some models run at 1440 rpm?

The larger pumps run slower: every 65, 80 and 150 mm model, the 100 mm models up to 12.5 HP, and 50PG-42-9-3.0 and 50PG-40-15-5.0 run at 1440 rpm; the rest at 2880 rpm. The speed is listed against each model in the technical data.

How do we service it without entering the sump?

Install it on an auto-coupling system. The pump lifts out on guide rails with no flange bolting and no sump entry, and its own weight reseals the connection on the way back down.
